Held on the first full moon of Scorpio, Samhain is the beginning of the celtic new year. Celebrations began on All Hallows Eve ( 31st October), hence the name Hallowe'en.
This is the time of year when the veil between the land of the living and the land of the dead was at its thinnest. Guided by lanterns, originally carved from Turnips, and more recently from Pumpkins, the souls of the dead would search for a way back to the land of the living, so that they could once more walk the earth. People would set a place for their departed relatives and lay plates of Harvest food outdoors.
The modern Christian holiday of All saints day (November 1st) is taken from this original Pagan festival. This is truly a feast for the soul.
