St. Patrick's Day is almost upon us, and what a great excuse to have a party! But wait just a minute! Before you begin planning, you must "pay your dues." You can't just go out and celebrate and not know why. I mean, not everyone is Irish, and if you're going to celebrate an Irish holiday, then you should at least know why. Just seems right.
St. Patrick's Day is a tribute to Patrick, Ireland's patron saint. At 16, Pat, as I think he was probably called by his Gaelic family and friends, was forced into slavery. He spent six years herding sheep until he escaped. He eventually returned to Ireland as a missionary. The story goes, he used the leaves of a shamrock to explain the meaning of Trinity (the Father, son, Holy Spirit), drove snakes from Ireland by beating his drum and converted the Irish to Christianity (on or around 400 A.D.). In other words, Pat was a pretty good guy when all was said and done. And that is why the Irish celebrate on the day he died (instead of the day he was born...which makes no sense to me).He said do not be sad when I pass away, celebrate with plenty of drink !!!!
